Economic Blackout - February 28th
The Power Of Your Dollar
If you're feeling uneasy about the current state of the world—frustrated, powerless, or disillusioned with the influence of large corporations—know this: you are far from powerless. In fact, as consumers, we hold an incredible amount of influence. The biggest corporations in the world exist and thrive because of us. Our purchases fuel their growth, and in turn, our choices can shape the future.
On February 28th, people around the world will take part in an Economic Blackout, a day of collective action to withhold financial support from major corporations and instead channel spending toward small, local businesses. It’s a moment to pause, reflect on our purchasing habits, and make a conscious decision about where our money goes.
Why It Matters
This movement isn’t just about boycotting for a day—it’s about awareness. It’s about
recognising how often we default to convenience and mega-retailers, and how
with small, deliberate changes, we can create a ripple effect that supports
communities, ethical business practices, and a more sustainable economic future.
How We're Taking Part
At MV Skintherapy, we believe in the power of ethical choices, and we’re actively participating in this movement. Here’s how our founder, Sharon is taking part in the event.
- Shopping at her local IGA in Freshwater instead of major supermarket chains.
- Skipping Amazon (always) —if it’s a go-to for you, consider this the perfect day to explore independent online retailers.
- Dining in at local restaurants rather than using food delivery apps that take a hefty cut from small businesses.
- Reevaluating travel accommodations—Sharon recently canceled an Airbnb booking after learning about the political affiliations of its co-owner, choosing instead to support an independent boutique hotel in Melbourne.
- Ethical banking & investing—Sharon moved her super fund after discovering it was investing in weapons manufacturing. Have you checked where your money is invested?
- Choosing independent bookstores over large chains and digital monopolies.
- Opting for local pharmacies & health stores instead of big-box retailers for essentials.
- Supporting small fashion brands & artisans rather than fast fashion giants.
- Using independent refill stations for household and personal care items instead of grabbing a mass-produced product off the supermarket shelf.
- Applying for BCorp certification! We've just started the lengthy and detailed application process to achieve BCorp certification, yay! Watch this space.

Sharon McGlinchey On Economic Blackout
“I can’t imagine as a company, staying silent on this. If we care about ethical business, community, and conscious consumerism, we need to walk the talk. Choosing where we spend our money isn’t just a transaction—it’s a vote for the kind of world we want to live in.”
Will You Join Us This Friday?
Let’s use this moment to pause, rethink, and reclaim our power as consumers.
Because when we come together, real change happens.
